Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and Poplar Forest

Entrance to Monticello
The front entrance to Monticello, Mr. Jefferson's home in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Visitors' carriages would have parked at the near end of this walkway. ( Thomas Jefferson's America )

Clock overthe front door

Wind Indictor
The outside face of the famous two-sided clock over the front door at Monticello (Jefferson's home in Virginia). The other face is inside the entry hall. Jefferson had a clock in every room, and one outside, at a time when nine out of ten Americans had no clock at all. ( Thomas Jefferson's America )

A young visitor enjoys the archeology section of Monticello.

In a one-room structure such as this, Thomas and Martha Jefferson found shelter from the storm upon reaching Monticello for the first time together. ( Thomas Jefferson's America )

Poplar Forest
"Poplar Forest," Thomas Jefferson's retreat home, located just two hours south of Charlottesville, Virginia. Jefferson designed this lovely octagonal home himself. While visitors from all over the world would show up on Jefferson's Monticello doorstep, Poplar Forest was strictly for family and invited guests.
