Seville, Spain

Seville
We are welcomed to Sevilla with delicious café con leches and other sumptuous breakfast goodies at Hotel Holos.

Seville
After breakfast we take a bus to town to begin our tour of Seville. Taking public transportation provides a great opportunity to meet the people and “pretend” that one lives there! Here Danna and Jim converse while waiting for the autobus.

Seville
Gothic arches in Seville’s great cathedral. Gothic art was Europe’s medieval art. (Story of the World, Vol. 2)

The tomb of Christopher Columbus in the Cathedral. (Story of the World, Vol. 2)

Seville
Bell tower on Seville’s cathedral-not a good place to be if you already have a headache!

Another shot of the cathedral in Seville.

Seville
The Alcazar palace in Seville looks Moorish but was actually built by Moorish workmen by request of a Catholic king after the Christians re-conquered Seville in the 1200’s. Through that arch are some of the most beautiful gardens on earth. (Story of the World, Vol. 2)

Seville
Royal coat of arms. The castle represents Castile, the lion Lyon. The rulers of these two Spanish kingdoms, Isabella and Ferdinand, married, giving their combined forces strength enough to drive the last Moors from Spain. Learn about this in Story of the World, Vol. 2

Seville
Through this door lie all things Spanish! Art like this is pervasive throughout Seville.

Seville
Islam forbids graven images of humans, but the Moorish abstract, geometric art is bright and beautiful. The art here is all Tile!A close up showcasing the exquisite tile work.

Seville
Beneath this dome, Columbus and Queen Isabella discussed his first voyage.

Even in Catholic Spain, one finds the ancient gods. Here is Hermes/Mercury.

Seville
The Damsel’s Courtyard. See the next photo for an explanation.

An explanation of the main courtyard. Charles V, grandson of Ferdinand and Isabella and also the heir to the Hapsburg crown, inherited an immense empire. He spent his life expanding it. This empire began to fall apart soon afterward. Charles’ son was Philip II, adversary of England’s Queen Elizabeth I.
(The Queen’s Pirate and Story of The World, Vol. 2)

Seville
Jim and Danna take a breather on a hot day at the palace in Seville.

Seville
Paella (the rice dish) and more Spanish delicacies. Randy and Jim are very happy, and about to get happier when they take their first bites…muy delicioso!

Seville
What to have for dessert? Ice cream?

Seville
Off we go on another scenic train ride-this time to Granada.
